Microsoft Patents “sudo” today with the USPTO

Yes, you read the title correct – “sudo” also known as “Super User DO” Linux command line (also known as “elevated user rights”), has been filed and assigned a patent number!

Run to the nearest window and look outside— is it freezing?? No? Then what the heck is going on?!! Have you no shame at all Microsoft?

Looking further at the claim, It’s legit – Not many people know about it yet (you will very soon though once the mainstream media understands what this actually means).
To give another example of what “sudo” really means, let’s turn to the ever-so-perfect Wikipedia:

“The sudo command is a program for some Unix and Unix-like computer operating systems that allows users to run programs with the security privileges of another user (normally the superuser, a.k.a. root). Windows has a command runas which has similar functionality.”

Let me get this straight – Windows already has a command called “runas”, but now they want to go patent the Unix command that’s been around since 1980 or earlier? As far as I’m concerned, this time Microsoft has just gone too far. Could it be they are upset they’re losing the desktop race to Apple so, they’re being the bully to whomever is in their path?

Here are more of the details right from the United States Patent & Trademark Office website:
The USPTO Patent number 7,617,530 was approved a couple days ago according to the document. Go check it out yourself.

The patent describes the elevation of user rights, why it’s a required command and also includes diagrams illustrating the functional aspect of “sudo” as it relates to a computer’s operating system.

Anyone with Linux background or interest should read the full article found on Groklaw

Is this in preparation of a Microsoft Linux distribution? Or another 5-year round of lawsuits?

In my opinion, this is another classic microsoft claiming to be the inventor of something they did not invent at all but would rather steal and put their name on it. SHAME ON YOU.
