Dirt came out on the heals of the Nirvana garbage as far as I can remember. First listen I remember the wailing and monotone-nirvana-like vocals, but much darker music. It wasn’t until I heard them play on MTV’s Unplugged did I really get a sense for the “music” – forget the heroin-laced-lyrics, it was the music that grabbed my attention. It was then I made it a point to see this band live – if they were half as good as I just witnessed on MTV, they would kill it live. (I did see them live about 5 months later – they did kill it!)
Some real (and interesting) facts follow:
Dirt was the band’s breakthrough album. Before its release in 1992, Dirt peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. Dirt’s release date is shared with Stone Temple Pilots and their album Core.. Not that STP is a big deal, but some say it did help launch Alice In Chains to international territories. The album was certified four times platinum status in the US, platinum status in Canada and gold status in the UK. The album has sold 3 million copies in the United States.
Where were you when this album was released? What were you doing when you hear “Angry Chair” for the first time?
